RE/MAX has agreed to pay $8.5 million to settle the Batton homebuyer commission lawsuit, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The settlement covers claims outside of the separate Sitzer Burnett case and releases U.S. franchisees and affiliates from related liability.

The agreement makes RE/MAX the second major real estate firm to settle in the Batton lawsuit. Keller Williams previously reached a settlement last month, though the terms of that agreement were not disclosed in the available sources.

The Batton case represents another legal challenge facing the real estate industry over commission structures and practices. Unlike the high-profile Sitzer Burnett case, the Batton lawsuit appears to focus on different aspects of buyer commission arrangements.

The settlement allows RE/MAX to resolve potential liability while protecting its franchise network across the United States. The $8.5 million payment suggests the company viewed settlement as preferable to continued litigation costs and uncertainty.

The resolution comes as the real estate industry continues to face scrutiny over traditional commission practices and fee structures that have been standard for decades.
