GreenWise brand frozen blueberries are at the center of an E. coli outbreak that has led to a voluntary recall, according to the FDA. The product, distributed by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of Chile, is suspected of causing infections across at least two states.

The recall was initiated on July 3, with the FDA publishing a notice on July 6. The CDC reports 12 confirmed cases, with four individuals requiring hospitalization—roughly a third of those infected. The outbreak is under joint investigation by the FDA and CDC.

The affected product is a single frozen blueberry item labeled under the GreenWise brand. Consumers are urged to check their freezers and avoid eating the recalled berries, particularly given the serious health risks associated with E. coli, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness.

The recall underscores ongoing risks in the food supply chain, especially for imported frozen produce. It highlights the importance of rapid traceback and public notification when contamination is suspected, as even small outbreaks can lead to significant health consequences.

Neither the FDA nor the CDC have yet identified the specific source of contamination, and investigations continue. Consumers in affected states should discard the product and monitor for symptoms, which include stomach cramps and diarrhea.
