The White House will present a detailed breakdown of its $1 billion East Wing renovation plan to Senate Republicans on Tuesday, aiming to counter Democratic criticism that the project is merely a new ballroom. Secret Service Director Sean Curran is set to deliver the presentation during a Republican lunch, according to Axios.
The administration argues the funding is essential for national security, not luxury upgrades. The $1 billion would be part of a budget reconciliation package that also funds ICE and Border Patrol, tying the renovation to broader law enforcement priorities.
A one-page document reviewed by Axios outlines the costs: $220 million for hardening security with bulletproof glass and drone detection; $180 million for a new visitor screening facility; $175 million for modern threat training; another $175 million for protectee security; and $150 million for counter-drone efforts.
The proposal faces skepticism from Democrats who view it as excessive spending. Its inclusion in reconciliation, which requires only a simple majority, gives Republicans a path to pass it without bipartisan support, though internal party divisions could emerge over price tag and priorities.
