Carlos Mencia, the comedian best known for his Comedy Central series 'Mind of Mencia,' has been charged with 12 felony counts of tax fraud. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office announced the charges on Tuesday, alleging that Mencia failed to report more than $8 million in earnings.

The charges stem from an investigation by the newly formed Business Tax Fraud Unit within the LA County District Attorney's office. This marks the unit's first high-profile arrest, signaling a crackdown on tax evasion among public figures and business owners.

Prosecutors allege that Mencia did not file tax returns for several years, allowing him to avoid paying taxes on substantial income. The 12 felony counts include multiple charges of failing to file tax returns and one count of tax evasion, according to the DA's announcement.

If convicted, Mencia could face significant prison time and financial penalties. The case underscores the heightened scrutiny of tax compliance by state and local authorities, particularly targeting individuals with high earnings who may have evaded their obligations.

Mencia's attorney has not yet commented publicly on the charges. The comedian, who has not had a major TV role in recent years, is expected to appear in court next month.
