Microsoft announced that the Windows settings backup and restore tool will be turned on by default for organizations using Microsoft Entra-joined or hybrid-joined systems. The change will take effect after upgrading to Windows 11 version 26H2.
The change is designed to simplify disaster recovery and device migration for IT admins, removing the need for manual configuration of backup policies. Affected systems include all enterprise devices connected to Microsoft Entra ID or hybrid-joined environments.
While not a vulnerability, the default enablement introduces a shift in data management posture—settings backups may include desktop configuration, taskbar pins, and accessibility preferences. IT teams should review group policies to control which data is synced.
Microsoft has not yet disclosed a specific release date for 26H2, but Insiders can preview the feature in upcoming builds. The company recommends auditing current backup settings before the rollout to avoid unintended data synchronization.
Some security analysts caution that increased data syncing could expand the attack surface if not properly governed, though Microsoft has not flagged any active exploitation or risk associated with the update.
