Stephen Ferrara has served as chief medical officer for both the Navy and the Central Intelligence Agency.
Overton is considered a protégé of Makary, while sources with knowledge of the process expressed particular enthusiasm about Ferrara's candidacy. The final decision rests with the White House, and no formal announcement has been made.
