Kamala Harris has begun privately reconnecting with prominent progressives, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, as she lays the groundwork for a potential 2028 White House bid. According to Axios, Harris called Mamdani last Thursday to discuss the party's future and plan a longer conversation.

The outreach signals an effort to strengthen or repair relationships with left-wing Democrats after a period of distance. The call came two days after Mamdani's endorsed candidates swept three congressional races in New York City, ousting two incumbents.

Harris and her team have also been engaging with pro-Palestinian activists over the past year. This includes at least one leader from the "Uncommitted Movement," which emerged in opposition to former President Biden's policies on the war in Gaza.

In April, Harris met with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Chicago on the sidelines of the "Power Rising" conference, a summit for Black women empowerment. These meetings suggest a deliberate strategy to broaden her coalition inside the Democratic Party.

Some analysts warn that overtures to the party's left flank could alienate moderate voters in a general election, a tension Harris would need to navigate carefully.
