Five people are dead after a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, according to San Diego Police. The incident began around 11:40 am PT on Monday when police received calls about an active shooter. Chief Scott Wahl described the scene as "extremely chaotic" during a press briefing, stating officers found three deceased victims outside the center.
The center also operates as a school, but all children present at the time are reported to be safe. Wahl noted that one of those killed was a mosque security guard, calling his actions "heroic" and saying he "undoubtedly saved lives." The motives behind the shooting remain unclear.
Prior to the shooting, at 9:42 am Monday, police received a report of a runaway juvenile whose mother believed he was suicidal and missing several weapons. She told authorities her son was "with a companion and that they were dressed in camo" and that she had found a note, the contents of which police have not disclosed. The juvenile and his companion are believed to be the two deceased gunmen.
The investigation is ongoing as police work to identify the suspects and establish a clear timeline. Authorities have not released details on the note or the relationship between the juveniles involved. The community is in mourning, with officials urging the public to avoid speculation.
No additional suspects are being sought at this time, and police are focusing on understanding the events that led to the tragedy. The Islamic Center's leadership has not yet issued a public statement, and security protocols at the facility are under review.
