Lauren Roy, a Northern Ireland sprinter, says she feels “punished” after being overlooked for selection for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The athlete expressed frustration with the decision, which she believes is unjust.
Roy, whose primary event is the 100 meters, has been a consistent performer on the domestic circuit. Her personal bests and recent form were expected to be enough to secure a spot on the team. However, selectors opted for other competitors, leaving Roy out of the squad.
The omission does not affect Northern Ireland's overall medal prospects significantly, as Roy was not a guaranteed medal contender. Still, the decision has raised questions about the selection criteria and transparency within Athletics Northern Ireland.
Roy now faces an uncertain competitive schedule, with the Commonwealth Games representing a major championship opportunity every four years. She may target other international meets later this season to build her case for future events.
“I feel punished for something I don’t understand,” Roy told BBC Sport. “I’ve put in the work and hit the times. It’s hard to accept.”
