The 2027 BMW iX4 was spotted testing at the Nürburgring, offering the clearest look yet at the electric coupe SUV ahead of its expected debut. The prototype showcases a new, sleeker design language with a sloping roofline, distinct from the brand's existing iX model.
The iX4 will join BMW's growing EV family, slotting between the iX3 and iX in size. Production volumes and battery specifications remain undisclosed, but the model is expected to leverage the company's fifth-generation eDrive technology for improved efficiency and range.
BMW has committed €800 million to its Spartanburg plant for EV production, though it is unclear whether the iX4 will be built there or at its Dingolfing facility. The Nürburgring tests suggest a focus on dynamic performance and handling.
The timing coincides with increased competition in the luxury EV segment from Tesla's Model Y, Audi's Q6 e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz's upcoming EQE SUV. BMW aims to have 15 fully electric models in production by the end of 2024, with the iX4 adding to that momentum.
While the iX4 represents an aggressive electrification push, critics argue that BMW's reliance on shared platforms with internal combustion engines could limit EV-specific design advantages compared to dedicated EV architectures from rivals like Lucid or Rivian.
