Chevron announced this week it's developing a natural gas plant specifically for a Microsoft data center in Texas, highlighting the trend toward dedicated power infrastructure. The shift reflects the massive electricity demands of AI operations, which rival entire cities in their power consumption.

The debate centers on speed versus system integration, as companies seek to avoid lengthy grid connection processes that can take years. Data center developers argue that independent power sources provide faster deployment and greater control over their energy supply. The approach also prevents adding strain to electric systems already struggling with capacity constraints from surging AI demand.

According to Cleanview market intelligence, roughly 30% of all planned data center power capacity is expected to be built on-site, up from virtually zero a year earlier. Michael Thomas, Cleanview's founder, suggested the trend could continue rising, potentially reaching 50% of planned capacity. The rapid shift represents billions of dollars in infrastructure investment decisions.

The power industry maintains that grid connection ultimately offers better economics and reliability through shared system costs and backup power options.
