The St. Louis Blues acquired defenseman Brandon Carlo from the Toronto Maple Leafs during the NHL draft on Saturday, both teams continuing an offseason of significant roster upheaval. The deal sends draft picks to Toronto in exchange for Carlo, who was traded from Boston to the Maple Leafs at the March 2025 deadline for a first-round pick, a fourth-rounder and forward prospect Fraser Minten.

Carlo appeared in just 88 games with the Leafs after that blockbuster trade. The Blues are betting on the 6-foot-5, 212-pound shutdown defenseman to bolster their blue line, while Toronto clears salary cap space and recoups draft capital.

The move reshapes the defensive cores of both Central Division and Atlantic Division contenders. For St. Louis, Carlo adds veteran playoff experience and penalty-killing acumen to a young defensive group. For Toronto, the trade signals a continued retooling under new front-office leadership, freeing up resources to pursue forward depth or goaltending upgrades this summer.

The 2026 draft continues with Day 2 selections, where teams like the Boston Bruins hold seven picks and the Pittsburgh Penguins made headlines by drafting twin brothers Markus and another Ruck — Markus went on Day 2 after his brother was selected in the first round. The Nashville Predators also snagged goaltender Dmitri Borichev in the third round, described as Europe's top-ranked netminder at 6-foot-3 with elite puck-tracking.

"We see Brandon as a stabilizing force who can eat hard minutes and help our younger defensemen develop," a Blues source told Yahoo Sports. The Maple Leafs have not commented on their draft-day strategy beyond the trade.
