The Atlanta Hawks signed former Houston guard Kingston Flemings, the No. 8 pick in the 2026 NBA draft, to his rookie-scale contract Monday. Hours later, the Dallas Mavericks followed suit, inking Morez Johnson Jr., the ninth overall selection, to a similar deal.
Flemings, a dynamic backcourt threat from Houston, averaged 18.4 points and 5.1 assists last season, earning All-American honors. Johnson, a versatile forward, put up 15.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, showcasing his two-way potential. Both players are expected to contribute immediately.
The signings add critical young talent to each franchise's core. For Atlanta, Flemings provides a backcourt complement to Trae Young. For Dallas, Johnson bolsters a frontcourt that will support Luka Dončić.
Flemings and the Hawks open their season against the Chicago Bulls on October 22. Johnson and the Mavericks tip off on the same night against the Utah Jazz. Both rookies will participate in summer league play in July.
"I'm ready to get to work and help this team win," Flemings said in a statement. Johnson echoed the sentiment: "Dallas is a championship organization, and I'm excited to be part of it."
