Elon Musk has yet to assist Rep. Thomas Massie in his upcoming primary, even after pledging support last year. The primary is three weeks away, and Musk has not lifted a finger for the Kentucky Republican, who faces Navy SEAL veteran Ed Gallrein.
Massie is the first Republican incumbent President Trump has targeted for defeat this cycle. The outcome will be seen as a gauge of Trump's political influence, with the president's organization mounting intense anti-Massie efforts.
A Quantus Insights survey from early April shows Massie leading Gallrein 46.8% to 37.7%, with 14% undecided. That margin is far tighter than Massie's previous reelection bids, signaling a competitive race.
Musk has cut huge checks to Republicans and GOP super PACs this cycle, but his absence from this race raises questions. Massie told Axios he doesn't expect the billionaire's help now, quipping that Musk found fixing Washington harder than landing rockets.
The primary on May 19 will test whether Trump's endorsement can unseat a sitting Republican. A win for Gallrein would signal the president's continued sway over the party.
